Public Test Realm (PTR) for Season 5

Starting on Tuesday, the 25th of the month, a week-long PTR will be available for players to join and test out the new features of Season 5. This is a PC-only PTR, but the developers are exploring ways to include console players in the future. During the PTR, players will have the opportunity to boost their characters or use copies of their existing characters from the live servers. These copies were made on June 20th, so they will reflect your characters' states as of that date.

Season 5: The Infernal Hordes

Season 5, beginning at its original date and ending on October 8th, introduces a major new endgame activity called "The Infernal Hordes." This activity revolves around the theme of hell, utilizing zones from the end section of the base game story. The Infernal Hordes is a wave-clearing game mode where players face off against increasingly difficult waves of enemies culminating in a new endgame boss encounter: the Fel Council.

The Fel Council Boss Fight

The Fel Council is inspired by the council from Diablo I, featuring five members but only three active at any given time. Each council member brings unique mechanics and effects to the fight, creating varied and challenging encounters. Defeating the council rewards players with access to a treasure room where they can choose their rewards, including Diablo IV gold, new legendaries and uniques, crafting Diablo 4 materials, and a guaranteed Greater Aether Legendary item.

Infernal Compass and Abyssal Scrolls

To participate in the Infernal Hordes activity, players will need Infernal Compass items, which function similarly to Nightmare Dungeon sigils. These compasses can be obtained from endgame bosses, Hell Tides, Nightmare Dungeons, and Whispers of the Dead caches. They come in difficulty tiers ranging from 1 to 8, with Tier 1 being accessible in World Tier 3 and Tier 8 featuring enemies at levels 180-200. Higher-tier compasses will require Abyssal Scrolls to unlock.

New Items and Equipment

Season 5 introduces over 50 new legendary and unique items. These new items are not only generally available but also specifically target-farmable from the Infernal Hordes activity. Some notable new uniques include:

    • Cisk (Druid): Earth skills petrify enemies on the first hit.

    • Third Blade (Barbarian): Weapon Mastery skills function as core skills.

    • Mocrux (Necromancer): Consuming a corpse spawns a homing missile minion.

    • Umra Crux (Rogue): Subterfuge skills spawn a totem that replicates damage.

    • Fox Omnium (Sorcerer): Autocasts two basic skills matching the element of recent non-core skill casts.

    • Rakanoth Wake (All Classes): Explodes with fire damage on skill use and includes cooldown reduction.

Rebranding of Uber Uniques to Mythic Uniques

Uber Uniques are now rebranded as Mythic Uniques, complete with a bright purple hue to distinguish them clearly. These items will have enhanced drop rates and specific targeting methods, making them more accessible and desirable.

Class-Specific Changes and General Updates

The developers have implemented numerous class-specific changes aimed at balancing and enhancing gameplay. Here are some highlights:

    • New tempering changes allow for bonus rerolls on legendaries with greater affixes.

    • Boss summoning altars will now instantly reset upon the boss's death, allowing for consecutive boss fights.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Diablo 4's Season 5 is shaping up to be an exciting update with significant new content, balancing changes, and quality of life improvements. While some balance changes might seem controversial, the PTR period offers a valuable opportunity for player feedback to shape the final release.
