Top 10 Axes in Diablo II: Resurrected
Today, I'm excited to share with you my top 10 favorite axes in Diablo II: Resurrected. Most of these are incredibly powerful, but I've also included a few that I find particularly interesting. Let's dive right in!
1. Death (Glorious Axe)
First on the list is an unusual base: the Glorious Axe. I've always admired the aesthetic of the Glorious Axe since my early days playing Diablo. The "Death" rune word (Hel El Vex Ort Gul) in this base offers 450 to 930 damage. "Death" is notable for its exceptional mods, especially for boss fights, thanks to its 50% chance of Crushing Blow and the Deadly Strike based on character level. On my Level 93 Barbarian, "Ax Hog," it's a perfect fit for a maxed-out Whirlwind build. Despite some drawbacks (like Glacial Spike not working with Whirlwind), it's a devastating weapon overall.
2. Grief (Berserker Axe)
Next, we have "Grief," another one-handed axe, this time in a Berserker Axe. Though its added damage isn't visible on the character sheet, the true power lies in its massive base damage. The 400 damage boost makes it a top choice for dealing high damage. It also features Ignore Target's Defense, -25% Target Defense (great for bosses and uniques), and other powerful mods. This setup shines when dual-wielded but is also effective with a shield for added defense.
3. Rune Master
Now for something unusual: the Rune Master. This axe can have up to five sockets, making it highly customizable. The Zod rune makes it indestructible, and it offers good damage (279 to 564) with the potential for even more depending on the runes you use. While not my favorite, its versatility can't be denied.
4. Mordor's Reaver
Here's a throwback to Diablo I with Mordor's Reaver in a Champion Axe. Despite not being the strongest (264 to 750 damage in ethereal form), it's packed with nostalgia. With a Zod rune making it indestructible, it has decent enhanced damage, attack rating bonuses, and other perks. Though it may not be top-tier, it's certainly a fun and stylish weapon to use.
5. Razor's Edge
Razor's Edge is a compact but deadly Tomahawk. With 40% increased attack speed, up to 225% enhanced damage, and -33% Target Defense, it’s a solid choice for a quick-hitting weapon. Its 50% chance of Deadly Strike and Open Wounds makes it excellent for PvP and PvE, especially for Uber runs. It’s a small but mighty axe with great potential.
6. Hellslayer
Another nostalgic piece from Diablo I, Hellslayer, is now in the form of a Decapitator. While not as impressive in Diablo II, it still offers significant damage (146 to 981). Its Fireball proc on attack adds a unique flair. With hefty bonuses to Strength and Vitality, it’s a weapon that looks cool and has solid attributes, even if it doesn’t top the damage charts.
7. Executioner's Justice
Executioner's Justice in a Glorious Axe is an interesting but underwhelming choice. It has a unique mod with a 50% chance to cast Decrepify on kill, which can be useful for breaking physical immunities. However, without procs working with Whirlwind, it’s not as effective as it could be. It does have good attack speed and enhanced damage, but its niche utility limits its broader appeal.
8. Breath of the Dying
"Breath of the Dying" (BOTD) is a legendary axe. Known for its massive damage (up to 400% enhanced), it also has a plethora of beneficial mods, including life and mana leech, and a 50% chance to cast level 20 Poison Nova on kill. This makes it both offensive and defensive, a true powerhouse in any build.
9. Last Wish
"Last Wish" is another top-tier weapon, often used in a Phase Blade to avoid durability issues. It’s perfect for Uber runs with its high Crushing Blow, Life Tap on striking, and Might Aura. The damage might be lower compared to other axes, but its utility and survivability make it invaluable in tough fights.
10. Death Cleaver
Lastly, we have the Death Cleaver, favored for its high Deadly Strike (up to 66%) and fast attack speed. Dual-wielded, it can be devastating in both PvP and PvE. Its high enhanced damage and effective mods make it a staple for any serious Barbarian.
Honorable Mentions
Ethereal Edge
An often-overlooked axe, Ethereal Edge is notable for its significant enhanced damage and the ability to remain indestructible. Its life steals and attack speed bonuses make it a solid choice for any Barbarian looking to cut through hordes of demons.
Doom
"Doom" (another rune word) provides a chilling aura with its Holy Freeze, slowing enemies significantly. It’s an excellent weapon for crowd control, combined with high damage and various elemental mods, making it a versatile and powerful choice.
Conclusion
Axes in Diablo II: Resurrected offer a variety of styles and functionalities. Whether you prefer raw power, versatility, or nostalgic value, there's an axe for every Barbarian. My personal favorites like "Death," "Grief," and "Breath of the Dying" stand out for their exceptional performance. However, don't underestimate the fun and unique builds that lesser-used axes can offer.
